How To Fast?

A Practical, Refreshing Guide to Spiritual Discipline

article written by Joel fadojutimi

Fasting can often feel daunting or even a bit intimidating. If you have ever avoided it because you thought, "Fasting just isn't for me; it's too hard," you are definitely not alone. While setting aside food is certainly a challenge, it is far more achievable than most people think.
At its heart, the goal of fasting is never to starve ourselves; it is simply to turn down the noise and centre our entire focus on Jesus.
To help you stay physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy during these seasons, here is a practical guide to fasting inspired by the teachings and practices at The Lighthouse Church.

Getting Your Mind Right: Framing Your Perspective

Before changing what is on your plate, it helps to adjust what is in your mindset. Fasting is a discipline of grace, not a burden.

Focus on Connection, Not Restriction:

The core point of fasting isn't about "staying away from food"; it is about getting closer to God.

Growth Over Metrics:

The validity of your fast isn't measured by how many hours you managed to go without food or how long you spent on your knees in prayer. It is measured by your daily spiritual growth.

Build Up at Your Own Pace:

It is completely okay to ease into fasting gradually. Starting slowly at a pace you can handle is far better than avoiding the practice altogether.

Reject Condemnation:

If you have a day where you struggle or simply can't finish the fast, don't be hard on yourself! There is no condemnation here. Just brush it off and start fresh tomorrow. (And no, you don't need to "make up" for missed days after the fast is over!)

Enjoy the Season:

View fasting as a refreshing, wonderful time of intimate communion with God and shared fellowship with brothers and sisters who are on the exact same journey.

Keeping It Safe: The Important "Do Nots"

Your health and safety always come first. Fasting should nourish your spirit, not harm your body.

1. Pregnancy & Nursing: Expectant and nursing mothers should not abstain from food. Instead, consider stepping away from non-food pleasures or tweaking your diet to cut out specific treats like desserts or sugary snacks. (It’s always a good idea to chat with a healthcare professional before changing your diet.)
2. Strenuous Physical Labour: If your daily job involves heavy lifting or rigorous physical work, hold off on food fasts to avoid workplace fatigue or injury.
3. Pre-existing Conditions: If you have health challenges or take daily medication, check in with your doctor first to make sure fasting is safe for you.
4. Intense Workouts: Skip the heavy gym sessions and high-intensity workouts while fasting. Stick to light walks instead to keep your energy balanced.
5. Never Abstain from Water: We do not fast from water! Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Adding electrolytes to your water is also a fantastic way to keep your energy levels steady.
6. Listen to Warning Signs: If you start experiencing severe headaches, nausea, or dizziness, it is completely okay to break your fast early. Try sipping some water first, but if the feeling persists, stop your fast; never push yourself to the point of illness.

Step-by-Step for Fasting Beginners

If you’ve never fasted before, take a deep breath! You don't have to jump into the deep end right away. Here is how you can ease in gracefully:

Join Corporate Prayer: Tap into morning and evening online prayer sessions. Praying alongside others makes a world of difference and gives you a real burst of encouragement.

Fast Secular Distractions: Consider temporarily deactivating your personal social media accounts (unless needed for work), pausing movies and TV series, and keeping social outings to a minimum.
Ease into Food Abstinence: Start simple by skipping just breakfast and using that extra time for prayer or reading Scripture. As your confidence builds, you can eventually try extending that fast through lunch. Go at your own pace; there’s zero rush.

Pursue Intentional Holiness: Fasting invites us to live life in a way that truly pleases God, aligning our daily habits and choices with obedience to Him.

Watch Your Character: Being hungry can sometimes bring out a moody side, but fasting should actually do the opposite! Aim to treat others as Christ would: walk in forgiveness, show patience, and extend extra love.

Staying Spiritual: Avoiding a "Hunger Strike"

We’ve all had those fasts where a super busy day slips by and we realise we haven't actually spent any quality time with God. But when we fast without engaging our spirits, we’re essentially just going on a hunger strike!

To keep your fast spiritually alive throughout the day, try these simple habits:
• Tune in to corporate prayer times whenever possible.
• Swap your usual meal breaks for reading the Word or praying.
• Listen to Christian podcasts, worship music, or sermons while you work or commute.
• Pick up a good Christian book or devotional.
• Take a quiet prayer walk outside.

Fasting Formats & Practical Tips

At The Lighthouse Church, we generally recommend either a Normal Fast (drinking water while refraining from food) or a Partial Fast (like a Daniel Fast, where you restrict specific foods like meats, sweets, and processed meals).
Most people in our community fast until 6:00 PM each day and break their fast with a balanced meal. Just be mindful not to overcompensate in the evening by eating massive portions or snacking non-stop!

Everyday Fasting Essentials

Hydrate Regularly
Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day; don't wait until you're parched.
Eat Quality Meals
When breaking your fast, prioritise clean proteins, complex carbs, fruits, veggies, and healthy fats over heavy, sugary foods.
Schedule Smart
Save your most demanding mental or physical tasks for the evening after you’ve eaten.
Prioritise Rest
Get plenty of sleep each night and give your body space to rest.
Know When to Stop
Always listen to your body. If you feel faint, unusually weak, confused, experience chest pain, or feel like you might collapse, stop the fast immediately and get fluids and food.
